Tips for New Mum to meet the Baby’s Requirements
Amongst those ecstatic moments of joy of starting of new chapter of motherhood, the other aspect of this joy is that the body is weak and exhausted. For these reasons, the new mum requires sufficient rest, proper nourishment and so on. Yet the following tips will help you have the confidence to cross this initial phase with ease. Let’s explore the tips to ensure the comfort and health of your newborn baby.
Holding the Baby Right:
Did you know that here’s a right way to hold the new born baby? Yeah! While holding the baby, you should ensure that the baby’s head doesn’t get jerk. So, ensure that the head rests on the crook of your arm and the hand should offer support to the spine of the newborn. With the other hand, you can pat, or use it to maintain the feed position and support your breast or simply keep it over the chest or tummy. Your touch creates a sense of comfort and security for the baby.
Gently Rock the Baby:
There are times when the baby is in the state of discomfort. This may be due to their sleepiness or hunger or pain in stomach. Whether you are trying to get the baby to sleep or to comfort the newborn, do not shake the baby vigorously. This shaking might lead to brain injury. Put yourself into the habit of the rocking your baby gently from side to side. You may choose to sing a lullaby as well.
Be Tender During Playful Activities:
You might have seen in people around you throwing children in the air or jiggling the baby on the knees. You may have been such a play toy yourself. But, the baby is not a toy and neither is ready for such tough game. Hence it is advised not to be rough and tough on the baby for a year and half.
Pay Special Attention to Hygiene:
Not only you as a mother, but also those who touch the baby, should follow basic hygiene. Make sure that you wash or sanitize your hands before touching the baby unless you had not been doing any other task than being with your love. You should also be cautious about wearing clean clothes and the clothes fabric should provide smooth touch to the baby. Whether you are using the nappies or diapers, keep checking so that the baby is clean and dry. In case of diapers, you can check less frequently, in around every four hours. These hygiene actions will keep the baby protected from infections and other induced allergies.
Baby’s Feed has No Time:
In the initial few weeks, the baby needs only three things – proper feeds, ample sleep and your special touch. A new born baby usually sleeps for around 16 to 20 hours a day. But, the sleep doesn’t happen at a single stretch. A child may demand feed every two hours or even sooner, hence the foremost responsibility of you as a new mum is to keep yourself ready for offering a feed to the baby, whenever the baby demands. Few things which will make your breast feeding enjoyable are:
- Hold the baby into the right position giving proper support to baby’s head.
- Hold your breast supporting it with the other hand.
- Ensure that the baby has enough of areola inside the mouth so that the baby may not intake air while sucking.
- Offer comfort suckling to the baby for it is as important as breastfeeding. After the baby has the nourishing feed to satisfy hunger, sometimes the baby tends to suckle for longer time than usual. This comfort suckling offers emotional support to the baby.
As parents, you need to realize that learning curve takes its own time. It is a great decision to seek some help during this time which will help ensure that the mother and the baby are well taken care of.
